New York / New Jersey
Bio:
I practice Judo, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and Muay Thai regularly. I also have experience in Karate, TKD, and Sambo. Competition is something I enjoy, and hope to fight professionally in Mixed Martial Arts before the end of 2011. You might say I have an unhealthy desire to buy new gear for Martial Arts/MMA :)
MMA Training Gloves

I found these gloves to be best suited for training MMA striking. They offer more protection that CSI's 5 oz. Grappling gloves (which are very comfortable and great for training grappling for MMA, but not so good for punches to the head).

Perfect for sparring amateur or professional...
-While bigger 12-16 oz. gloves may offer more protection, their larger size doesn't allow them to mimic parrying/blocking punches, etc. in an amateur or pro MMA match. And, of course, the CSI Training Gloves offer substantial protection for pad-work and bag-work.
- I've found them useful during circuit training because I have full use of my hand/fingers (for drills involving weights/kettlebells), but am still able to integrate pad-work and grappling drills without having to put on/off gloves in the middle of my circuit.

CSI Grapple Gloves

I'm very happy with these gloves. They are light and durable, which is exactly what I was hoping for.
For $20, I've gotten a lot of use out of them on the heavy bags and focus mitts, and they're still going strong.
As someone already pointed out, they are not intended for sparring with strikes (5 oz weight). However I've gotten a lot of use out of them as far as wearing them while training Grappling for Mixed Martial Arts... The goal being to become comfortable using grips and submissions/sweeps/escapes while wearing MMA gloves, but at the same time not necessitating the awkwardness of safe (and bigger) sparring gloves.

Answer to: Are the large 16oz?
/M1 Impact Bag Gloves

Grant doesn't specify (even on their website : http://grantboxing.com/Grant-M1-Stand-up-Bag-Gloves/productinfo/GM1SBG/ ) the weight of these gloves, although I believe these gloves in all sizes are 12 oz.

Answer to: Not seeing a weight for the gloves, each state has their own rules, the state in which I reside requires 6oz gloves mist I find are just 4oz.
/M1 Fight Glove

These are the Professional gloves, which means they are 4 oz.

What you're looking for are amateur fight gloves, which will range from 6-7 oz. Some examples are:

/Elastic IMF Bag Gloves

These could be one of the gloves where you need to pull the elastic cuff back (kinda roll it up), before putting the glove on. A lot of gloves even have a small adjustable velcro strap under the elastic... which you pull back over the cuff after you get the glove on. But hey, maybe you already tried that, in which case I'd say damn, you have some large paws.

Answer to: i know it says large, but my buddy weights 180, and he's 5'5 would a large still fit him, or should he get regular?
/Professional Style Shin and Instep Guard

The XL's might give his leg a little more room, but they will likely be way too long for his shin if he's 5'5".

--- The Larges may be a bit more snug, but will fit his shin much better due to the length.

Answer to: Do these move around when you grapple?
/Ventillated Shin and Instep Guards

These would be OK for limited grappling, but you'd be better off with any of these: http://www.elitemma.com/controller.aspx?type=view&info=search&a=ft&v=grappling shin

--- The ones designed specifically for Grappling/MMA are sleeker and will stay in place better than some standard shin guards.

Answer to: do I need to get large if I want to were hand wraps under them?, I'm 6'1" 165 lbs,
/Open-Thumb MMA Grappling Gloves

For reference, I'm about 6'1" 170 lbs... and I wear the Regular with no wraps. Getting wraps under them wouldn't be an easy task as there isn't much wiggle room, I'd say go Large if you want to wear some wraps underneath.

Answer to: Are these a fairly standard sizing? I.e my 8 inch hands would be a large if I intend to wear medium sized wraps?
/KARPAL eX MMA Gloves

These run normally, I'd say 8" long hand would call for a size Large.
